A New Year: New Beginnings with Jesus

At the start of every year,  I reflect on God's blessings and provision for the past year and write a little note of prayer to Jesus thanking Him for my life, my family, His goodness, faithfulness and the hope of the New Year and the chance of new beginnings in Him. That's what the New Year represents to me. It’s all about Jesus! And that's what the word of God declares, it's all about Jesus from the foundation of the world.

“In The beginning God created" Genesis 1:1).  How did God create? He spoke creation into existence. Throughout the bible from Genesis to Revelation we see the powerful word of God come to us through His prophets. “Thus says the Lord.”

It’s not an accident that the first words in the Gospel of John are exactly the same as the first words in Genesis.  John writes:  “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”  (John 1:1-3) This passage of scripture reveals exactly who the “us” is speaking of when He said, “Let us make man in our own image. “ (Gen. 1:26)  John wanted us to understand that Jesus is the agent through whom all things were created. He tells us that Jesus is the logos, the outward expression of everything that God is.  So every time we read “ then God said” in the first chapter of Genesis, we know that it is Jesus, the living Word of God, accomplishing God’s plan of creation and for creation from beginning to end.

"Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.
Christ is also the head of the church,
    which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.
For God in all his fullness
was pleased to live in Christ,
 and through him God reconciled
    everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross."
 (Colossians 1:15-16)

This means that everything was created not only through Him but for Him. Everything that exists, exists for Jesus.  Therefore, our life apart from Him is no existence at all.

As we go into the New Year some of us may be burdened down with the goals that perhaps we didn’t reach the previous year, or our failures, our circumstances, our continued struggles and strongholds, or even our walk. Perhaps we've lost our zeal for Christ and  have been walking at a distance from the one who is the very reason for our existence, allowing the world to creep in and steal our joy. We may even feel condemnation or discouragement. If that's you, it’s time for a new beginning but we cannot do it alone apart from Jesus.

This year we can commit our lives anew to the one that created it all and has the power to intercede mightily on our behalf to accomplish His perfect will and plan for our lives from the foundation of the world.  Let us rise up and surrender the past year at the foot of the cross and commit to a new year of new beginnings with Jesus. Our God can do mighty things with a willing and surrendered heart.  To Him be the glory!
